Monarch Butterfly Discovery

Today we found a Monarch butterfly in the playground.  We saw that it was tagged with a sticker that has a web address on it - www.mb.org.nz.  That reminded us of when we went to Te Puna Quarry Park earlier this year where they were tagging butterflies.  We followed the link to the website and reported our sighting to the Monarch Butterfly NZ Trust.  On this site we found a video of a "Munching and Dancing Caterpillar".

Last week Briearnah brought a cocoon into school.  While we were in assembly it came out and we looked after it until it could fly away.  It was very exciting.  We are also working on some butterfly art, so it has been a butterfly crazy time around here recently.

Wasn't it great finding a butterfly with a tag on it after seeing them being released at Te Puna Quarry! Do you think it came from the park? Can butterflys fly that far? Chloe wondered if the butterfly was eating, but someone else suggested that butterflies don't have mouths? Can anyone find out for us?

Hi Room 8, it's me again Briearnahs Dad, the butterfly videos are awesome, I did not no that the cattepillar ate it's own cacoon "yummy" I wonder if they get sore tummies..Is that a Monarch cattepillar on someones hand in one off the videos? it looks funny with those big horn looking things.

Butterflies do not have a mouth to taste and eat food like we do. Instead, they taste through their feet. When they stand on their food, they can taste the food.

So, instead of a mouth, they have a kind of long, straw-like thing called a 'proboscis' which enables them to drink juices and nectar. When this 'proboscis' is not being used, it is coiled-up like a garden hose.

I found this information on a great web site about animals and insects.
